3 ALTERNATIVE HOUSING TRENDS When you think of a home, what comes to mind? Perhaps a single-family dwelling with a good-sized yard. Maybe a duplex, townhouse condo. Or maybe you think of the farm you grew up on. The truth is, just like Canada itself – Canadian homes are very diverse. These three alternative housing trends illustrate that home is definitely where the heart is. • Laneway homes. The popularity of laneway homes has spread over the past few years. Smaller homes that are built on existing lots, a laneway home is often a converted garage or even a new structure erected in an existing home’s backyard. Perfect for grandparents, adult children, guests – even renters, laneway homes get their name because they are most often accessed via the back lane. • Co-ownership. Not an alternative home, just a different way of looking at home ownership. Instead of buying a residence on their own or with a partner, people are opting to buy with friends and extended family members. Not only does it help ease the stress of only one or two individuals paying the mortgage, but it also creates a built-in support system under one roof. • Cabins. Cabins may not seem alternative. After all, it’s pretty common to own a cabin or cottage – somewhere you can escape to on weekends, and during the glorious days of summer. However, what if you decide to live in your cabin year round? More and more people are forgoing the “live in the city, vacation at the lake” lifestyle by opting to just live at the lake permanently.

WHY BACKYARD PODS ARE THE NEXT BIG THING If you’ve never heard of a backyard pod, you’re about to be introduced to the latest trend in home offices – even though they aren’t really inside the home! Backyard pods are more like sheds, but instead of housing potting soil and shovels, they house a desk, a computer – and maybe even a coffee station. For those tired of hunkering down with their laptop at the dining table, a backyard office might sound like a little slice of paradise. Similar to the concept of a tiny home, a backyard pod can be purchased ready to go and placed in your yard. Companies like Tiny Room Co. and Urban Pods have been providing homeowners with beautiful miniature spaces – ready to become the birthplace of your next great idea.
