FIVE LOWMAINTENANCE LAWN ALTERNATIVES There’s a reason why traditional grass lawns are so popular. They feel great under our feet and – if well maintained – look beautiful. But that’s the key – maintenance. Looking for a still beautiful, but less time-consuming lawn alternative? Here are five options! 1. Ornamental grass. Drought-resistant and low-maintenance, ornamental grasses are pretty and easy. Pretty much the opposite of a traditional lawn. 2. Moss. One of the easiest lawns out there. You don’t have to mow it or water it and moss loves shady areas, where conventional grass may not want to grow. 3. Red creeping thyme. A beautiful alternative to grass, red creeping thyme forms a dense mat that can be walked on. 4. Flower bed. If you have a smaller yard, you may want to convert the entire area into a flower bed. The key is to plant native varieties and use lots of low crawling plants so you don’t have to spend all your time weeding. 5. Clover. An extremely affordable option that also acts as a soil conditioner. Clover lawns do well in poor soil, so if you have trouble growing traditional grass, clover may be your best bet.

TIPS ON CHOOSING A RUG FOR YOUR ENTRYWAY Your entrance is the first area of your home both you and your guests see. Want to make a statement while still keeping it highly functional? You need a great rug! Depending on the size and shape of your entrance, you may only have room for a doormat. Or, if you have a long and narrow entrance, a runner would be perfect. If you have enough space for an area rug, then you have more room to make a visual impact. If you have a square shaped entrance, see if a round area rug will fit, which will add a unique feel as most homes have square or rectangular entrance mats. As for color and pattern, the best option for impact as well as the ability to look great year after year is a darker patterned rug. A light rug will show everything, while a solid dark rug won’t fair much better. Patterns tend to hide dirt and grime as whatever is on the rug simply blends in. If you have a particularly messy household – think kids and pets – you may want to go with a washable rug. You can just throw them in with the rest of your laundry!

One of the best ways to green your interior space is by installing eco-conscious flooring. Of course, if you already have flooring in good condition then the most sustainable thing you can do is to keep it. But if you’re in the market for a flooring update, keep these three things in mind. • Certifications. Many flooring options now come with certifications such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or GreenGuard. Keep an eye out for these labels, which show that respected third-party organizations have deemed a product eco-responsible. • Durability. No matter how many certifications a flooring type has, it isn’t going to be sustainable if it isn’t also durable. This also means choosing the right type of flooring for each room. For example, wood flooring in a bathroom definitely won’t last. • End of Life. Not only do we need to think about where our flooring products come from, we also need to think about what happens to them when their life span is over. For example, can it be recycled? Repurposed? Maybe it’s biodegradable? These are all things to consider on the road to selecting the most sustainable flooring type for your specific needs. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN ECO-FRIENDLY FLOORING
