HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR KID’S ROOM IN LESS THAN A WEEK The key to any successful organization project is to have a plan. Here is a five-day outline you can follow to bring your child’s space from disaster to oasis in under a week. Also, if your child is old enough – make sure to involve them in the process! • Day 1. Declutter. It’s time to say goodbye to broken toys, books no longer read and finally go through that towering pile of stuffies. • Day 2. Sort. Once you’ve decided what to keep, put like with like. For example, books and board games can go together, Lego and building blocks can go together, dolls and stuffed animals can go together. • Day 3. Clean. Vacuum, wash walls, clean any light fixtures, put all textiles such as bedding and curtains in the wash. • Day 4. Create zones. Think of your child’s room as a mini-house. Is there a comfy area for them to read? A hard surface for them to colour and do puzzles? A fun space to play dress-up? Even if it’s a small room, having zones will help keep it organized in the future. • Day 5. Decorate. The fun part! Have your child help you choose favourite pieces of artwork and frame them for a gallery wall. Pick out a few new colourful throw pillows – or if you and your child are crafty make them yourself!

WHAT’S NEW INWOOD FLOORING? Whether you’re looking to redo your floors for yourself or for sale, here are three new wood flooring trends that will breathe life into your home. • Fumed wood flooring. Most wood floors are stained, but a fumed wood floor is actually pretreated by putting the wood planks in a chamber and releasing ammonia. Each wood piece reacts differently to the ammonia, so the finished result is a floor with a lovely, unique patina. • Patterned wood flooring. While laying wood floors in a pattern, such as herringbone or chevron isn’t actually a new trend – it has come into focus as of late due to its eye-catching effect. Perfect for traditional, modern and even industrial-styled homes, a patterned wood floor is like a work of art beneath your feet. • Mixed materials and trickling. This trend combines wood with another flooring type, such as tile, to create a beautiful effect called “trickling.” For example, a wood floor that slowly gives way to small hexagonal tiles. This trend is perfect for a mudroom or a kid’s room or anywhere you want to add a bit of fun.

3 SMALL KITCHEN HACKS Have you ever heard the saying that a small home offers both hardships and opportunities? It’s so true! Sure, it can be frustrating to never seem to have enough space – especially in areas you spend so much time like your kitchen. A small kitchen shouldn’t stop you from creating amazing meals or even just enjoying meals you’ve ordered in! Our first suggestion – utilize your sink space as extra counter space with a rack or cutting board that fits on top. Simply pull out your rack or cutting board, place on top and use it for serving dishes during dinner or as a place to store extra plates. Next up, bring in non-kitchen storage items and use them to organize your pantry. Don’t have a pantry? Create a cool display area on the wall for your produce, using a hanging shoe organizer. Just think of how cute your apples and bananas will look hanging next to your table. Plus – easy access at snack time! Last tip, who needs plastic containers when you have reusable plastic covers that stretch to fit on top of all sizes of bowls, plates and cups? Space saving and eco-friendly!

3 RENOVATION IDEAS TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF YOUR RENTAL PROPERTY Got a rental property or thinking of buying one? According to real estate experts, these three renovations can help increase the value of a rental – meaning higher rents and a higher resale value. • Add a second bathroom. While it’s a big one, this renovation can take your rental to a whole new level. This reno works particularly well in properties that already have plumbing roughed in. • Add heated floors. On the topic of bathrooms, maybe you can’t add in a second, but you can certainly upgrade the existing one. One way to do this is to add heated flooring. If the bathroom flooring already needs an upgrade, lay down electric-heated mats below the new tile and your tenants will feel like they’re entering a spa every time they head to the washroom. • Upgrade or add inwindows. Who doesn’t love natural light? Particularly if the windowproviding the light also has a view. Even if that view is just of the street in front of the property, replacing old windows with highly-insulated ones will save on heating costs, while a window where there wasn’t one before can completely transform a once dark space.
