Crochet has found new popularity and it is easy to see why. There is something satisfying about sitting down with yarn, a hook and a project you can actually hold. Crochet can be social, practical and creative and you don’t need a giant craft room to get started. All you need is yarn and a hook. Beginners can start small. A washcloth, dishcloth, coaster or simple cozy can teach the basic rhythm of stitching in a few days. Small stuffed animals are another popular choice, though they introduce more techniques and can be a little trickier. Granny squares are another classic. Once you have made enough, you can turn them into blankets, pillows, bags or clothing. That makes crochet appealing to people who enjoy projects that can grow over time. The payoff is a finished, usually adorable object that’s impressive for something made with a single hook.

A primer is a preparatory coating applied to a surface before painting. It can improve adhesion, help create a more even finish and cover stains, strong colours or differences in the material underneath. It is especially useful on porous surfaces as it helps create a consistent base for the paint. Skipping it entirely may require extra coats to get an even colour and may be more likely to cause adhesion or peeling problems. Do you actually need it? The answer depends on what you are painting and what is underneath the new colour. Look at the surface before opening the paint can. If an existing surface is clean, sound and similar in colour to the new paint, you may not need a separate primer. If it is porous, stained, bare, dramatically different in colour or otherwise difficult, primer is a smart first step. Whether you are painting over drywall, stained surfaces or a bold previous hue, the right primer can save you time, money and touch-ups.
