GARAGESTORAGESOLUTIONSFOREVERYBUDGET A well-organized garage is a common goal for homeowners. But because it’s often considered as space separate from the home – especially if it’s a detached garage, the garage can be overlooked. If finally getting your garage in order is on your to-do list, take a look at these storage solutions for every budget. DIY storage towers. If you already own a bunch of plastic bins, this is the perfect weekend DIY project. If you don’t, plastic bins are super affordable and readily available at most hardware stores. Simply measure the width, height and depth of your bins and use plywood to build a shelving unit so you can stack multiple bins vertically. Anchor the towers to the wall for stability.

Wire shelf and basket system. If you don’t have the time, tools or skills to DIY, head to your local hardware store and check out their selection of wire baskets and shelving. Most stores will cut shelves to your preferred length, and for installation all you need is a drill, screws and a level. Create a full wall of wire shelving. Or start small with a few shelves and add on later. Built-in storage cabinets. More of an investment than the other storage solutions, built-in cabinets give the garage a sleek, polished look. If you’re planning on staying in your home for a long time, or have the money for it, cabinets are

the way to go. And you can still save money by buying pre-made cabinets and installing them yourself rather than having someone build and install custom cabinets for you.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING A FIXER UPPER Home reno shows make it look like an adventure – and it can be, but the reality of buying a fixer upper is a lot messier than it looks on TV. That being said, you can still create a beautiful home from a house that needs a lot of love. Just make sure to ask yourself these questions before buying. How much work is needed? Is it a total gut job or more of a cosmetic update? How much work needs to be done is the first question you should ask yourself. You should also ask professionals, because what you see may not even be the most important tasks at hand. Hidden issues with plumbing, electrical, insulation and so on can come with huge bills and should be tackled before any surface upgrades begin. How much is it going to cost? Once you know how much work is needed, you can come up with a budget. And while it can be tempting to keep your budget tight so you don’t overspend, a realistic budget is actually the best way to ensure the money aspect stays under control. Make sure to include extra for the unknowns. You’ll be glad it’s there when you need it. What’s your final end goal? Some people buy fixer-uppers to live in, while others buy them to flip. Either way, your end goal should play into every stage of the renovation process. If you’re renovating for you, the design and finishes you choose can reflect your needs and personal style. If you’re renovating for resale, what you select should appeal to the most buyers possible. Research what is selling in your area and use that as a guideline. 1/2 inch thick. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool completely. 7. Once the breads are completely cool, carefully remove each piece with a spatula. Cloud bread is best eaten immediately, but you can store it in the refrigerator in an air- tight container. Layer the breads with parchment paper to prevent them from sticking to each other. Stored this way, the bread should last 3 to 5 days. DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 300°F. Line a large baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper, then lightly grease. 2. Separate the egg yolks and egg whites. 3. Add the softened cream cheese, yogurt or sour cream to the yolks. Beat with a hand mixer until fully combined and mostly smooth. Set aside. 4. Replace or clean the whisk attachments. Beat the egg whites until glossy and opaque. The mixture should form stiff peaks that don’t fall over; if the egg whites seem watery or foamy, beat them a bit more. 5. Add 1/3 of the egg whites to the yolks. Gently fold the egg whites into the yolks until just combined. Repeat with the remaining egg whites, 1/3 at a time. 6. Scoop the batter onto the baking sheet, forming six circles. Carefully spread until they’re

UPDATE YOUR KITCHEN WITHOUT BREAKING THE BUDGET

A home’s kitchen can make or break a sale, which is why it’s the best place for you to invest your time and money before listing. A full-scale remodel isn’t necessary to transform your kitchen from outdated to outstanding. One of the best ways to freshen up your kitchen is with a paint job on both the walls and the cabinets. The best way to make the right kind of impact is to choose neutral colours that will appeal to the most buyers. White cabinets and soft green or blue walls are a perennial fav. A slightly trendier, but still safe bet, would be grey cabinets with lighter grey or off-white walls. Colour can be brought in with accessories. Next up – countertops. Certainly a more expensive renovation, but one that can offer big rewards in resale value. Plus, with newer countertop materials and technologies, budget friendly options can look much more high-end. As with the wall and cabinet colours, choose something neutral that will appeal to the widest range of buyers. Drawer and cupboard handles come next and should be sleek and simple. Same goes with light fixtures. If you can afford to add in some pot lights they also are a huge selling feature. Pendant or track fixtures can act more as task lighting as well as provide visual interest. If your kitchen includes a dining area or breakfast nook, the pendant or chandelier that hangs over the table is the place to choose something with a bit more style. Matte black fixtures are popular as well as ones that have a modern farmhouse or simple industrial vibe. As for staging, store small appliances in the cabinets and try and keep the countertops mostly clear. For viewings, add a bowl of crisp apples or some fresh flowers and make sure the sink and counters are sparkling.

MUST-TRY HOME ORGANIZATION HACKS

Whether you’re organizing for a sale or just for your own peace of mind, the amount of home organization hacks seems nearly endless. But if you only have time for a few of the very best, give these creative tips a try. • Use shower curtain hooks to hang tank tops. Loop tank top straps through inexpensive shower curtain hooks and hang multiple tops from one hanger. This hack also works for scarves, belts and handbags. • Use bread tags to label cords. Save the plastic tags from bread bags and use a sharpie to label cords in your office space or behind your TV. Never wonder which plugin goes with which piece of tech again! • Use shoe organizers for things other than shoes. Behind the door shoe hangers work for almost anything. Use it in your kid’s closet for toys, in your broom closet for cleaning supplies, or in your bathroom closet for makeup and skincare products. • Use pallets to organize your garage. Hang a few pallets on the wall in your garage and use it to hang snow shovels, extension cords and more. Also works well in your garden shed. • Use dresser drawers for under the bed storage. A popular DIY is to remove dresser drawers and place baskets in the empty cubbies. But then what do you do with the drawers? Slide them under your bed to hideaway blankets and off-season clothing. • Repurpose a wine rack as a towel holder. Hang an old wine rack in your linen closet or above your toilet. Roll up your towels and simply slide them in.
