KITCHENRENOTRENDSWITH GREATRETURNS Kitchen renovations are so popular because – as the saying goes – the kitchen is the heart of the home. But a kitchen remodel also offers one of the highest return on investment in comparison to other home improvements. Whether you’re renovating to modernize the space, make it more functional for your family, or impress potential buyers, any one of these three popular kitchen trends will help you recoup your costs whether you sell now or in the future. Open concept. Aside from the entire kitchen itself being open and spacious – or at least feeling spacious – elements of the kitchen should also contain that open-area feel. Popular trends include replacing some or all of the upper cabinets with open shelves to store bulk foods in glass jars and an eclectic mix of dishware in plain sight. Use the base cabinets for all the practical items a kitchen holds, organized in divided drawers or containers for easy access. Smart technology. Ever thought you’d be able to communicate with your refrigerator via your phone? Well, with today’s smart kitchen technology – you can! Apps on a smart phone synced to a fridge can keep an up-to-date grocery list. Meanwhile, smart ovens now have the ability to preheat while you commute home. Beautiful lighting. A kitchen is nothing if it’s not well lit, but that doesn’t mean functional lighting needs to be boring. There are so many beautiful and unique fixtures on the market, from glamorous pendant lights to industrial track lights, to LEDs that light up when you open your cabinet doors. A well thought out lighting plan is one of the best ways to make your kitchen pop!

HIGH-CONCEPTECO-FRIENDLY FURNITURE Innovative designers are the perfect advocates for the earth because their eco-friendly furniture is both green and highly artistic. London designer Charlotte Kidger repurposes polyurethane dust by turning it into multi-colored sculptures and tables that appear to be made from fine pieces of coloured sand. European-based ecoBirdy takes the plastic from used toys, 80% of which would have ended up in landfills, incinerators and the ocean, and turns them into children’s furniture. Brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana designed an entire furniture collection from one of the world’s most sustainable materials – cork. Meanwhile, the Brazilian designers of the Easychair created what appears to be a chair made of living flowers, but it’s actually made out of knotted recycled fabric. Lastly, Paris’ The Pipeline Project – which takes used PVC pipe and turns it into furniture – pairs PVC with solid oak to create modern, colourful chairs. THREESNACKFACTS Snacks are not only tasty – they’re also fascinating! Here are three interesting facts about food. 1. Strawberries have more vitamin C than oranges. 2. A peanut is not a nut. It’s a legume. 3. The biggest gingerbread house was decorated with 4,750 pounds of icing. That’s heavier than a giraffe! Courtesy of www.kids.nationalgeographic.com
