INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2022 It’s the time of year again where we look towards what’s to come in the New Year. And as far as interior design goes, where things are going is natural. We’re talking neutral paint colours, natural wood tones and organic materials. Sounds relaxing, right? Let’s dive in! • Neutral colour pallet. Neutral walls have long been on trend, but in 2022 – everything is going to be neutral. Off-white walls, flax-coloured linens, light-toned woods and soft, unassuming artwork. Sound boring? Never fear, you can always forgo the trend entirely, or spice it up with a burnt orange accent wall or some forest green bedding. Still natural tones, but with much more pigment to them. • Natural wood tones . Not just on your furniture, but also on light fixtures, accents – even on feature walls. Light toned wood brings a Scandinavian or Japanese interior style to a home, meaning cozy and inviting – yet minimalist and elegant. • Organic materials . What a great way to be more sustainable! Look for textiles made from organic cotton or bring elements from nature into your home such as stone, greenery and tree branches.

DON’T PUT YOUR GRASS ON THE GROUND – PUT IT ON YOUR ROOF! Have you ever heard of a sod roof? It’s actually a pre-historical Scandinavian roofing technique, and was the most common type of roofing on rural log homes in Norway until the late 19th century. But thanks to people’s interest in building more sustainable homes, sod roofing has been making a comeback due to its non- existent carbon impact. A sod roof has a carbon positive footprint as it helps to clean the air – all while providing a roof over your head. It also has many lesser-known benefits such as retaining runoff from rain, which then keeps water away from your foundation. Sod roofs are also excellent insulators and keep homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter. As long as you properly waterproof before installing the sod, maintenance is minimal. Sod roofs are particularly appealing to those who live in a home with a flat roof, as it creates a beautiful oasis on top of the building’s structure.

FREE ONLINE DESIGN TOOLS TO HELP YOU PLAN YOUR HOME Do you wish there was a way you could see what your interior spaces will look like before renovating or buying any furniture or accessories? Well, thanks to these three online design tools – you can! • Armstrong Design Visualizer. Thinking of replacing your flooring? Before you do – check out the design visualizer tool from well-known flooring brand Armstrong. With hundreds of flooring types to choose from, you can upload a photo of your space and try them all out – virtually! • Bob’s 3D RoomDesigner. Online retailer Bob’s Discount Furniture has a first-class 3D room designer, but don’t let its high quality scare you away – it’s quite easy to use and allows you to design a 3D model or your room, then add realistic-looking furniture and decore to see how everything fits. • HomeByMe. Possibly the most professional free tool on this list, HomeByMe is still very user friendly. While you can only make three projects before having to sign up, three is enough if all you want is to figure out the spacing or design of a couple of rooms in your home.

Canadian Museum of History in Quebec

CANADIAN ARCHITECT SPOTLIGHT: DOUGLAS CARDINAL

Born in 1934, Douglas Cardinal is an Indigenous Canadian architect. His work is known for its smooth and curved shapes, which were influenced by his Aboriginal heritage as well as European expressionist architecture. A few of his most famous buildings are the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, the Telus World of Science in Edmonton, Alberta and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. Cardinal grew up near Red Deer, Alberta and has said that he has always been drawn to unconventional forms and to the natural landscape. He recalls his mother telling him at a very young age, “You’re going to be an architect.” He is the recipient of numerous awards spanning his decades-long career, the most recent being for his design of the Gordon Oaks Red Bear Student Center in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which he received in 2016 at the age of 82.

City of Calgary, Dec. 1, 2021 - Driven by growth in demand for all property types, there were 2,110 sales in November, just shy of the record for the month set in 2005. “Lending rates are expected to increase next year, which has created a sense of urgency among purchasers who want to get into the housing market before rates rise,” said CREB® Chief Economist Ann-Marie Lurie. “At the same time, supply levels have struggled to keep pace, causing tight conditions and additional price gains.” New listings in November totaled 1,989 units, which was fewer than the number of sales this month. With a sales-to-new-listings ratio of over 100 percent, inventory levels dropped to 3,922 units and the months of supply dipped below two months.
