SUMMER GARDENING OFFERS ITS OWN CHALLENGES Just because the warm days of summer are here that doesn’t mean an end to gardening around the home. True the time of planting is long gone, and the harvest is still weeks away, but for the avid green thumb balmy days of the season are the perfect time for a variety of chores. • Keep weeding. Spend a few minutes during the cool of the morning to pluck vegetative invaders from your flower beds to help your garden plants grow better. • Water regularly. No living thing can expect to survive without water, including the plants in your garden. Set up a routine for watering, matched to any local watering restrictions of course. • Don’t forget to fertilize. The hot dry days of the season can be stressful for plants, so now is a great time to provide some needed nourishment. • Time for changes. Some plants are geared for spring, others are at their best in the fall. The summer is the time to replant to get the most out of your yard and garden. Gardening is a year-round pleasure that pays dividends in a myriad of ways. Take the time and enjoy this bountiful season.

For many summer is the season of travel. But how can you ensure your home and property remain safe while away? Thanks to a variety of services and a wave of new and exciting technologies that job has gotten much easier and far more automatic. If a person needs high security, there are a variety of regional companies capable of installing professional alarm systems that can be monitored 24 hours per day. This level of security could also include foot patrols by guards – any number of firms within your region have the trained personnel to carry-out these duties. A low-tech counter to that approach would be the installation of electrical timers to turn individual lights on and off over the course of an evening, creating the illusion that someone is living in the now empty house. This ‘lived in’ look can be further enhanced by pre-paying a lawn care company to maintain the property and by having a kindly neighbour collect your mail or newspapers, so they don’t pile up. Another techie approach is the installation of a smart door lock. Smartphone accessible, these systems let you unlock your door remotely from your smartphone while granting temporary access to neighbours or other designated agents via expiring access codes. This is especially important if you have asked someone to feed the cat or to water the houseplants. Each person’s needs and budget differ, but whether low-tech or state-of-the-art, there are many ways available to help secure your hearth and home. Do your own research and create a system before you leave so that home safety worries are not part of your travel agenda.

A contemporary of Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph David Abernathy was an American civil rights activist and ordained Baptist minister. He was one of the founders of the Montgomery Improvement Association, the organization behind the Montgomery bus boycott which took place in 1955 / 1956, a pivotal campaign in the cause of equal rights in the United States. He was an executive board member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), becoming its president following King’s assassination in 1968.



BARBECUE TREAT: GRILLED HULI HULI CHICKEN INGREDIENTS: 1 cup packed brown sugar 3/4 cup ketchup

DIRECTIONS: 1. In a small bowl, mix the first 6 ingredients. Reserve 1-1/3 cups for basting; cover and refrigerate. Divide remaining marinade between 2 large shallow dishes. Add 12 chicken thighs to each; turn to coat. Refrigerate, covered, for 8 hours or overnight. 2. Drain chicken, discarding marinade. 3. Grill chicken, covered, on an oiled rack over medium heat for 6-8 minutes on each side or until chicken reads 170°F; baste occasionally with reserved marinade during the last 5 minutes. 4. As an added treat, try serving with barbecued pineapple spears.

NEW BEGINNINGS IN A POST-PANDEMIC WORLD When it first entered our collective consciousness nearly three years ago, no one could have imagined how drastically the Coronavirus pandemic would alter our lives and society. Leaving no facet or segment untouched, one of the lasting and most positive lessons taught by the experience was the importance of the local community. In many ways, all aspects of our communities have become more self-supporting and resilient than they were prior to the pandemic.

CONDO OWNERS NEED TO READ DOCUMENTS One of the unique aspects of owning a condominium in a development owned by a strata corporation (also known as a condo corporation or co-ownership) is the fact that you are essentially becoming part of a community of owners. Like in any community there are rules, in this case spelled out within the corporation’s strata documents. As an owner you will have a say in the development of your community and will (through your strata fees) be paying for maintenance, upgrades and other improvements. Those obligations will be spelled out in the documents that are included with your purchase. Strata documents will typically contain such pertinent information as: – The minutes of strata corporation annual general meetings, normally for the past two years. – The design and layout of the complex and its strata plan. – A corporate budget and breakdown of accounts. – A depreciation report of the overall complex. It’s vitally important to know the fiscal and physical health of the project you are buying into. While not a crystal ball into the future, accurate documents will provide a realistic picture of the commitment you, as an owner, are making in your new community. – A list of the strata’s rules and bylaws. – Information on storage and parking.

Known by many names, yet recognized by all as a distinctive and especially beautiful lumber, yellow cedar boasts a uniform yellow colour that is prized by woodworkers and builders worldwide. Known for its hue, aromatic scent and elegant finish this is the ideal wood for window frames, paneling, custom joinery, furniture, cabinetwork or any job where quality is a key factor. Yellow cedar lumber is the right choice for any residential or commercial project where the wood will remain visible and accessible – it’s not the sort of material you want to cover up. Harder than most softwoods and very resistant to decay, yellow cedar is used in jobs ranging from bridge decking to boatbuilding. Considered a true craftsman’s wood, the tree’s uniform colour and ease of use make it ideal for any project requiring durability and an elegant appearance. Clear grade (knot free) lumber is frequently sought for such high-end projects as the construction of shrines and temples. Contemporary boat builders use the wood for a variety of vessels, both fresh and salt water, such as powerboats and racing shells. The strength and stability of the wood (meaning it does not twist, shrink or swell) make it well suited to the manufacture of paddles and boat oars. For non-maritime projects, yellow cedar is commonly used in patio decking, stairs and in landscape applications. Thanks to its resistance to decay the wood also finds uses in environmentally sensitive projects such as in water reservoirs and as railway ties positioned above water courses, as no form of chemical treatment is required. Yellow cedar is a specialty wood that should be considered for any task that has to stand tests of time and weather.
