HOWTO ADD STYLE TO A KITCHEN ISLAND If you have a good-sized kitchen island, or maybe you’re dreaming of adding one, you might be wondering how to make it stand out – while still complimenting the kitchen’s overall look. One popular choice is to paint the island a different colour than the rest of the kitchen cabinetry. A blue island amidst a sea of white cabinets gives the kitchen a coastal feel, while a lemon yellow island brings a youthful, happy flavour. Wood is also a beautiful option. Wrapping an island in a light-toned wood feels clean and fresh, while salvaged wood adds character. Adding moulding to a built-in island can give it more presence, while adding wheels to a moveable island makes your kitchen feel transformable. While lighting isn’t necessarily attached to an island (although LED light strips are a thing!), pendant lights hung above an island provide much needed task lighting – and can add to the atmosphere if placed on a dimmer switch.

WHAT HOMEOWNERS WANT IN A BATHROOM RENO – RIGHT NOW From colours, to materials, to fixtures, to overall style – there are a lot of things to consider with a bathroom renovation. Sometimes knowing what others are doing can help guide you when making decisions for your own bathroom overhaul. Here’s a breakdown of multiple areas of bathroom design – and what homeowners are choosing to do right now. • Overall style. Homeowners love a modern bathroom, with a transitional style as the most common second choice. This means clean lines and simplicity reign supreme, while lovers of a transitional style want a bit more detail and warmth added. • Colours. When it comes to colour in a renovated bathroom – homeowners gravitate toward white, white and more white. In a recent survey by Houzz, 58% of people chose white countertops, 32% chose white vanities and 46% chose white walls. Close to the top of the list was white’s slightly more forgiving cousin – grey. • Flooring. Ceramic or porcelain tile is unsurprisingly the most common flooring type selected for bathroom renos, with marble coming in second and vinyl flooring a close third – most likely due to its affordability. • Other. There are so many more things to consider in a bathroom reno. Homeowners are also loving water-efficient and fingerprint-resistant faucets, freestanding flat-bottomed tubs, side by side mirrors and wall sconces paired with recessed ceiling lights.

BENEFITS OF LIVING IN A CONDO AS A SINGLE PERSON

If you live on your own, a condo is a great place to call home. It can be hard to make time for work and recreation and maintaining a full-sized home as a single person, and living in a condo means many of the maintenance jobs are taken care of for you. Condos also add a layer of security, since most only allow residents or friends of residents to enter. Condo buildings may also have security cameras installed in areas such as the lobby, hallways and amenity areas. Another fantastic benefit of living in a condo is that because most are located in city centres, everything you need should be in walking distance. Not only is this great for convenience, but it also means you may be able to forgo owning a car entirely – or at least drive a lot less than you would if you lived in a more remote neighbourhood of single-family homes.

WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE ADDING BUILT INS TOYOUR LIVING SPACE By definition, built-ins are any sort of cabinetry or shelving feature that are anchored to a home’s walls. What layout, style and colours you choose will depend largely on the reasoning behind adding the built-ins. Do you need them primarily for storage? If so, consider installing deeper built-ins with a mixture of cabinet or drawers sizes and various shelves for displaying more decorative pieces. Or do you want built-ins specifically to showcase a collection such as books, travel treasures, photographs and so on? You might want to consider adjustable floor to ceiling shelves so you can customize the height between them to accommodate different sized items. As for style and colour, while white built-ins with simple detailing add a certain coziness to a space, simple minimalistic built-ins made of a light-toned wood lean more toward a Scandinavian feel. Or, if you want the vibe of an old-world library, go with a heavily detailed style in dark wood to add a grand, almost aristocratic feel.
